This gets to be a special page.
I had the electrical system figured out, all the ground wires and power connections in the right place, an ignition switch wired up, the m-Unit programmed to work with my setup, the carb rejetted and installed and a temporary exhaust in place.
I wasn’t ready to put fuel in the actual tank ’cause I still needed to do the clear coat, so I grabbed a couple clamps and an old lawn mower gas tank I cannibalized from a mower that died on my a few years back. One of the few times my brain going ‘hey, I might want to hold on to that’ has actually paid off. And no, I’m not a hoarder, I just play one on TV. In the garage, anyways.
I poured some gas in and fired it up. Nothing. It cranked just fine, but no sounds of maybe-thinking-about-starting. Hmm. I came into the house and poked around online to see if I was forgetting something obvious. No – all good. The fact that in was cranking pointed to at least the starter motor behaving itself.
On a whim, I tried again:
Now THAT was one of the more amazing moments of my recent life, quarantine-hair and all. I suddenly felt like this thing was actually going to work! I mean I always figured it would, but there was a little voice way in the back of my head prepping me for disaster. Or at least some hidden monster cost like maybe the engine itself was shot.
As it turns out, everything was just fine. 🙂
